Understanding SmartThings Sensors for Your EP1

Your Everything Presence One (EP1) provides multiple sensor readings when connected to Samsung SmartThings. Below is an overview of the available sensors and their functions.

Temperature, Humidity, and Illuminance

  • Temperature – Measures the current room temperature in Celsius using the built-in sensor. You can apply an offset to adjust readings (see "Settings" below).

  • Humidity – Displays the room’s humidity level as a percentage.

  • Illuminance – Measures ambient light levels in lux using the built-in light sensor. The EP1 case has side slots to allow light to reach the sensor, so ensure these are not obstructed for accurate readings.

Motion and Presence Sensors

  • mmWave Sensor – Detects motion using millimeter-wave technology. It has a configurable blind time (default: 12.5 seconds) before transitioning to a Clear state.

  • Motion Sensor – Uses PIR (Passive Infrared) to detect movement. It has a timeout period (default: 10 seconds) before returning to a Clear state.

  • Presence Sensor – Combines the mmWave and PIR sensors. If either sensor detects motion, the presence state is "Detected." Both sensors must be clear before the state changes to "Clear." This is the recommended sensor for automation.

Adjusting Sensor Settings

To adjust settings, open the SmartThings app, tap your EP1 device, and select the three-dot menu (⋮) → Settings.

mmWave Sensor Configuration

  • On Latency – Sets how long motion must be continuously detected before the sensor reports "Detected." Helps filter out false triggers from unintended objects.

  • Off Latency – Determines how long the sensor remains in the "Detected" state after movement stops. A value of at least 15 seconds is recommended.

Distance and Sensitivity

  • Sensitivity – Adjusts how reactive the mmWave sensor is to movement. Higher sensitivity may detect small movements, while lower sensitivity helps reduce false triggers.

  • Distance – Sets the maximum detection range (up to 8m). While 8m is the maximum, detection accuracy decreases with distance, so proper placement is crucial for best results.

Turning Off LEDs

  • mmWave LED – Disables the flashing LED on the mmWave sensor itself.

  • EP1 Board LED – Turns off the onboard status LED on the EP1 board.

These settings allow you to fine-tune your EP1's performance within SmartThings to better fit your needs.
